A 1-1-1 configuration is an ultra-spacious layout with only three seats across the width of the plane, offering massive amounts of personal space and direct aisle access for everyone.
You will only find a 1-1-1 layout in exceptional circumstances. It is most famously used by Cathay Pacific in their First Class cabins, or by Virgin Atlantic in business class on narrower wide-body jets like the Boeing 787 or Airbus A330. Because there are only three seats across the entire width of the aircraft, the aisles are incredibly wide, the seats themselves are massive, and the sense of exclusivity is high. If you see this layout on a seat map, you are guaranteed a very comfortable and spacious flight.
For solo travelers, yes. It provides significantly more lateral space per passenger. However, couples might prefer a 1-2-1 layout so they can sit together in the center section.
It is highly inefficient in terms of real estate. Airlines make more money fitting four seats across (1-2-1) than three seats across.
A 1-2-1 configuration is a cabin layout where there is one seat by the window, two in the middle, and one by the opposite window, ensuring every passenger has direct access to an aisle.
Direct aisle access means a passenger can leave their seat and walk into the aisle without having to step over another passenger.
